first make sure that you hitch thingy, is the same size as your ball thingy, if it is then you may have to pull up on your locking mechanism thingy to get it to seat properly.

Check the hitch on the trailer, is it fully open. The most common problem is that tongue on the trailer hitch doesn't fall back far enough to ride down on the ball. Lift the hitch release on top, and hold it open. I like to slide a screw or something similar thru to hold it open. If that doesn't do it, take a large screwdriver and push the tongue back. Don't stick your fingers in there, use the screwdriver. Please keep all your fingers attached. Lubrication can help too. WD-40 works well.

I'm going to agree with Chester. Chances are you've got a different size ball/receiver. Good thing the ball was bigger that the receiver; if it was the other way around, everything will look OK to the untrained eye. Then the first time you hit a bump on the freeway, the trailer pops off!
